The Quad ESL-63 is a full-range electrostatic loudspeaker introduced in 1981 as the successor to the earlier ESL-57. What makes it unique is its “concentric ring” stator architecture: the stator is split into eight rings, each fed with slight time delays so the panel behaves more like a point source, reducing the extreme directionality typical of electrostatic panels.
Designed for clarity, transparency, and tonal neutrality, the ESL-63 has no conventional woofers or crossover networks. Because it is a pure electrostatic design, bass extension is modest—but the tradeoff is extremely low distortion, instantaneous transient response, and a sense of open, airy musicality. It was often praised by listeners who valued articulation, spatial realism, and articulate midrange more than sheer output or heavy bass.
