In recent years, high-end audio has embraced streaming in a big way, making it easier than ever to access high-quality music from your favorite platforms. McIntosh recognized the growing demand for high-end streaming solutions and responded with two new products: the MSA5500 and the DS200. While the MSA5500 is an all-in-one streaming integrated amplifier, the DS200 is a true standalone streaming component designed to function as either a pure digital source or a complete digital preamp.
McIntosh took its time refining this product. The DS200 underwent months of real-world testing, with lots of firmware updates to improve functionality and performance. The result is a polished, high-end streaming DAC that delivers the legendary McIntosh quality in both build and sound.
So, what exactly makes the DS200 special? Let’s dive in.
Company History
If you ask any audiophile to name a brand that’s stood the test of time, McIntosh is almost always at the top of the list. Since Frank McIntosh founded the company in 1949, it has built a reputation for making some of the most iconic audio equipment ever. McIntosh isn’t just another high-end brand—it’s a piece of music history. Their gear powered the Grateful Dead’s famous “Wall of Sound” in the 1970s, a groundbreaking system that changed live sound forever and is still talked about today. Whether it’s their legendary tube amps or cutting-edge solid-state designs, McIntosh has earned a dedicated following for products that not only sound incredible but are built to last for generations.
We got the chance to visit the McIntosh factory in Binghamton, NY, and seeing their process firsthand was something special. Every product is put together with an incredible level of care, from the hand-assembly of their signature glass front panels to the thorough testing each unit goes through before leaving the factory. It’s clear that McIntosh isn’t just making audio equipment—they’re crafting pieces of audio history, designed to stand the test of time.
